The Invitation: Wedding Stationery Pieces Explained
What is it?
The star of the show! (Well, you are the star of the show, because it is your Big Day, but this is the star of the paper show.) Your invitation sets the tone for your event, and the design gives a hint of what’s to come. The purpose of your invitation card is to give your guests the essential details - who’s getting married, where it’s happening, and what time to show up.
When should I send it out?
We recommend sending them out 8-12 weeks before your wedding - but we believe you should order your invitations as soon as you have your information finalized. The closer it gets to the wedding, the more frequently those little last minute tasks will pile up, and trust us, it will be a huge relief to have your stamped, addressed invitations ready to go. Getting them ready to send out is one of those tasks that seems quick, but somehow ends up taking a lot longer then you expect, so you should get it out of the way ASAP. Then you can do the other important tasks you are required to do as an engaged person, like staring into your beloved’s eyes, obsessively checking your gift registry, or wondering if it’s going to rain on your wedding day.
What information should I include?
Invitation wording is a topic I could write a whole other blog post on (and trust me, I will), but at the most basic level, it should include both of your names, the names of whoever is hosting the event, the date and time of the event, and the name of the location.
Why should I care?
Because invitations are the best! This is truly the most fun you can have with paper products. They serve an important purpose - they tell your guests when and where to show up, and even better, they will set the tone for your event, and get everyone prepared for an awesome day. If you are having a Star Wars themed wedding, this is the time to send all of your loved ones a laser cut Death Star inviting them to your nuptials. If you’re super into florals, you can commission a beautiful watercolor floral painting that you can carry throughout your entire suite. We are lucky to live in a time where invitations are not quite as bound by the rules of etiquette, so you can do essentially anything you want, and it will be awesome. There is nothing more exciting than sending out your invitations and then, a couple days later, seeing the excited texts roll in. Now your wedding is really happening!
