Fresh starts and decluttering

David and I recently deep cleaned our entire apartment. We blocked out three days (surprisingly hard), took everything out of its spot, and decided what we were going to actually keep. It was our second time konmari-ing our home, and I was shocked at how much stuff we had accumulated. I feel like the Magical Art of Tidying up is a pretty divisive topic, but it is an experience that brings me so much joy and peace both times I’ve done it. ⠀

Sorting through my belongings and deciding what I would like to carry with me is a meditative and emotional experience. I got rid of a lot of stuff that felt like it belonged to a past life - stationery samples, clothes I hadn’t worn in years, art I purchased in college - and rediscovered things I had forgotten I owned. ⠀
⠀
Our place doesn’t look too different on the outside, but open a cabinet or go into a closet, and you’d be able to see the difference immediately. Mentally, it makes a huge difference as well. Keeping all of this stuff around drags your attention down - I would spend so much unnoticed energy either moving things around to make them fit, or feeling guilty because I hadn’t worn something in a while, or trying to find what I actually wanted, or trying to remember to fix something… the list goes on. I feel so much lighter, and honestly happier, when I look around my home and know that I love and chose to keep everything here!
