What I've been reading - January Edition

2021

I’ve been reading a ton lately, and it’s been super fun! I’m finally getting better at reserving books ahead of time at the library, so I’ve always had a book when I wanted one. I am not a book reviewer, but I love finding book recommendations through people I know, so I thought it might be fun to check in occasionally and give you very brief reviews! You can see these written out on my blog with links to the books.

beach read by emily henry

Beach Read

Super cute! A fun, quick read, and it hits the difficult-to-achieve combo of being entertaining/light AND well written.

euphoria by Lily King

Euphoria

I liked this! It was a little hard to get into at first but I was deep into it by the end.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Untamed

I was hesitant about reading this because it is so popular, but it turns out it’s popular for a reason. A lot of the advice felt really common sense, but in that way that some things feel universally true - it definitely gave me a lot to think about.

My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent

My Absolute Darling

It took me a little bit to wrap my head around this book, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I hated it. It's really, gratuitously violent, there is a lot of abuse, and the way the teen girl main character was written made a lot more sense when I learned the author is a man. It was not enjoyable and there was not really a payoff at the end so I'm mad I finished it.

Open Book Jessica Simpson

Open Book

Damn, I never really thought about Jessica Simpson that much before this book, and now I want to be friends with her! She’s cool! She’s been through a lot! This book is pretty juicy and I really enjoyed reading it!

Tell Me Lies by Carola Lovering

Tell Me Lies

I guess it kept me interested enough to finish it, but I found the characters unlikeable, I didn’t understand anyone’s motivations for anything they did, and it kind of read like someone telling you about the glory days of their college experience, which is kind of fun, but mostly boring. Also, the guy in this story sucked and I don't understand why anyone would want to date him, much less put their entire life on hold for him.

The Only Girl in the World by Maude Julien

The Only Girl in the World

I feel bad that I didn’t love this memoir, because abuse that the author overcame was horrific, and I’m glad she’s in a better place now. That being said, it was pretty grueling to read, and it wrapped up so quickly at the end that it left me with a lot of questions.

Finding Freedom by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand

Finding Freedom

I’m kind of embarrassed to have read this book, not gonna lie. It’s a fun read if you’re lightly interested in the royal family, but it also sounds like what Harry and Meghan would write about themselves if they could - I want hot goss, not a rose colored look at their lives and choices leading up to this point.
