The number one reason I love what I do is the challenge of taking someone else’s ideas, and vision for their wedding, and creating something that is even better than what I could have dreamed up on my own. Translating a feeling into the medium I love the most can be such a joyous process, and it’s a special day when you meet someone who moves you creatively.

Heather is the floral designer behind Eclectic Sage, and she has an incredible energy. The first time we met at her office, her dog Colorado snoozed on the floor behind us (after getting her fair share of pets from me, of course), and she and her mom tossed around ideas at lightning speed, while she bounced around the office, pulling different inspiration sources. I’ll be honest, sometimes I wasn’t  sure I could picture what she was going for, but what came together became one of my favorite designs - ever.

We knew that because of Heather’s career, florals would have to be incorporated, and she also wanted Colorado featured in the invitations. She was so inspired by the marbled envelope liner - that was actually the first thing we decided on!

I illustrated a lush, tendril-y floral border for the invitation, using flowers Heather intended to use for the wedding, including parrot tulips, ranunculus, and anemone.  My favorite part was drawing Colorado, and tucking her in at the border. We also decided that she needed to be included on the wax seal! I think this is such a sweet way to include a beloved pet in your wedding invitations, and it makes me so happy when couples choose to do that.

We were guided by the marbled envelope liner in choosing the color palette, and decided that to mix everything up, we should include bright green velvet ribbon as the belly band. Heather’s bridesmaids were going to wear velvet, and it felt like a nice departure from the typical. She was ahead of her time, because a year after we made that decision, I think velvet is having a moment!

I’m so happy with how this suite turned out. It’s beautiful, has classic elements, but also such a wonderful creative energy, and is so uniquely Heather. It was such a breath of fresh air to work with someone who has spent time honing her own creative perspective and felt the confidence to take risks.
